Netherlands VAT check questions
What format does a Dutch VAT identification number use?
A Dutch VAT identification number, or btw-id, uses NL followed by nine digits, the letter B, and two digits, for example NL123456789B01.
Is a Dutch btw-id the same as an omzetbelastingnummer?
No. The Dutch Tax Administration distinguishes the customer-facing btw-id from the omzetbelastingnummer used for contact with the tax authority. Use the btw-id for a VIES check.
What if the Dutch VAT number is valid but the details do not match?
Compare the returned name and address with the customer record. If they do not match, ask the customer to confirm the correct VAT identification number before relying on it.
If the registry does not answer, review the VIES error guide. For a usable response, run the checker below and keep the dated result with the invoice record.
For registration or tax-account questions, consult the Dutch Tax Administration VAT ID guidance.
What VIES can return
- Valid: the VAT number is currently confirmed for intra-EU transactions.
- Invalid: VIES did not confirm the number as valid at the time of the check.
- Unavailable: VIES or the national VAT registry did not reply.
Before relying on the result
Match the VAT result with your customer's invoice details and keep your own evidence of the check. A valid VIES response is a useful record, but it is not a substitute for your compliance workflow or advice from a tax professional.
If Netherlands is unavailable in VIES, retry later before treating the VAT number as invalid. Member-state registry outages can look like a failed check even when the number itself is fine.
