BE VAT format

Belgium VAT number check

Check the VAT identification number supplied for Belgium in VIES. Read the current registration response and keep it with the input and date; the format alone does not establish registration.

Belgium: identify the VAT number before checking

Local designation
Numéro TVA / BTW-identificatienummer
Official structure
BE followed by ten digits
Invented format illustration
BE0123456789

The illustration is for reading the structure only. It is not a verified business, a checksum guarantee or proof of a valid registration. Use the actual VAT ID supplied by the business; no live VIES check was made for this illustration.

Keep all ten digits, including an initial zero when supplied. BZSt notes that historical nine-digit identifiers are represented with a leading zero. This does not mean that every officially structured ten-digit Belgian identifier starts with zero.

Format, registration and an unresolved check

  1. Keep the full supplied identifier and its country prefix. A plausible format is only the first step.
  2. Read the actual VIES response. An invalid result may mean no number exists, no intra-EU activation, or registration is not finalised; ask the business to confirm with its tax authority.
  3. A timeout or unavailable registry leaves the check unresolved. Retry later rather than recording it as invalid. Keep the input, date and actual response separately from the invoice details.

This checker currently accepts ten Belgian digits only when the local part starts with 0, plus legacy compatibility for nine digits. It does not cover every officially structured ten-digit BE identifier. If the supplied number has another official ten-digit form, use the official VIES service without adding, dropping or replacing digits. A local invalid-format rejection happens before VIES is contacted and is not an invalid registration result from VIES.

Check the supplied VAT ID in the official VIES service.

What VIES can return

  • Valid: the VAT number is currently confirmed for intra-EU transactions.
  • Invalid: VIES did not confirm the number as valid at the time of the check.
  • Unavailable: VIES or the national VAT registry did not reply.

Before relying on the result

Match the VAT result with your customer's invoice details and keep your own evidence of the check. A valid VIES response is a useful record, but it is not a substitute for your compliance workflow or advice from a tax professional.

If Belgium is unavailable in VIES, retry later before treating the VAT number as invalid. Member-state registry outages can look like a failed check even when the number itself is fine.
